Mountain Biking Equipment

Mountain biking places big demands on your equipment; having the correct equipment for the day is essential for your own comfort and for reasons of safety. The following printer friendly downloadable lists cover the essential items for a day of coaching or for a day of guiding on remote trails.

Mountain Biking Kit List

Bikes - need to be well maintained and in good working order. We will ensure your bike is set up correctly for you and check that it is running well. We also carry tools and spares in case of breakage or failure on the ride. Hardtails with front suspension are suitable for most riding including the Nevis Range Red Route. Disc brakes are recommended but not essential. Full suspension cross country or trail bikes are great too. They can be harder work on the up hills but more fun on the down hills!

Helmet, gloves and glasses - are all essential PPE. Helmets and gloves are worn whenever we are on a bike. Glasses must be worn when there is any chance of muck or tree branches going into your eyes.

Shorts - should be padded and baggy. We don't do lycra on mountain bikes! Long trousers should not be baggy at the ankles. Leggings worn under baggy shorts is a good way forward if it is cold and dry.

Shin guards - with or without knee pads should be worn if you wear shorts.

Rucksack - should be small (25ltrs maximum) and compact.

Survival Bag - 6' orange poly survival bag is essential.

Clothing - base layers should not be cotton; polyester or nylon are OK, a wicking base layer (e.g. coolmax or dryflo) is ideal. Neat fitting waterproof jacket and trousers are required.

Hats and Gloves - bring a warm hat and waterproof gloves if it is cold and wet.

Other items - bike lights, inner tubes, brake pads for your bike, sun glasses, sun cream, a blister kit, flask (essential in winter), O.S. 1;50 000 map numbers 41 and 34, compass, whistle, energy, enthusiasm etc.

Mountain bikes and helmets can be hired from Nevis Cycles in Fort William. If you let us know we can collect your hire kit for you in case you arrive in Fort William after the shop has shut.

If you have any queries, however simple, please contact us. We'd rather spend the time making sure you are prepared for your course than for you to arrive with the wrong kit.
